What 4K is and how to retransmit it to cable networks.
From Wikipedia:
Ultra-high definition television (also known as UHDTV):
a type of television resolution standard that provides image clarity
several times higher than both standard and high-definition television, as well as
higher than most modern cinematic standards. Other names: Ultra HD and
Ultra High Definition Video (UHDV). Ultra-high definition television includes
two digital standards 4K UHDTV (2160p) and 8K UHDTV (4320p), which were proposed by NHK Science &
Technology Research Laboratories and approved by the International Telecommunication Union in
August 2012, as recommended by
ITU-R BT.2020
1HDTV is the exclusive distributor of the Insight UHD 4K channel.
“...the 4K content of the Insight channel requires 12-bit color,
which corresponds to the parameters of the most advanced 4K TVs. The extended dynamic
chromaticity range ensures more gradations of colors on the screen and prevents parts of the image
from being over-lit and darkened, thus revealing color gradations and
and the fine structure of the subject matter instead. Many experts see further development of
TV signal playback technologies in the area of HDR (HDR-High Dynamic Range)” (N. Orlov: link to the interview)
To descramble the channel from the NSK operator (a Tricolor project, no channel operator in the Siberian project),
a standard professional module is used with a conditional
access card which has a special subscription class attached.
A distinctive feature of the channel is that it is encoded by the next-generation
H.265 standard encoder (HEVC), which is more efficient in terms of signal compression at a
comparable level of quality. The HDMI standardization in version 1.4 provides for two types of 4K:
Quad HD, 3840 x 2160 (corresponds to 16:9 aspect ratio of modern TVs)
4К-2К, 4096 х 2160
Both standards are designated Ultra High Definition.
Most (if not all) head stations of cable and IP operators do not have
professional receivers with a built-in H.265 (HEVC) decoder. This
is primarily due to the insufficient supply of such equipment
on the Russian market today.
Still, there are a number of cable operators who have already successfully received and retransmitted the channel to cable networks. Reception is ensured using the standard equipment
of head stations supporting the reception of SD and HD channels. In this respect,
there are no special features for receiving the Insight UHD 4K channel (DVB-S2, 8PSK).
However, there are a few simple steps you need to take to receive the Insight UHD 4K channel from satellite,
as follows:
accept a satellite channel with the above parameters;
descramble it using a professional module with an additional subscription class attached;
transmit it to the cable network without decoding it.
Is it possible to retransmit the Insight UHD 4K channel on a cable network?
A simple calculation of the required bandwidth shows the following:
for QAM 64, it is 6.89*6=41.34 Mbit/s. The useful band remaining is 41.34*188/204=38.1
Mbit/s. If you have QAM 128 or 256, then there will be even more space to add
multiple SD channels with an average 4K channel bitrate from a satellite at 25 Mbit/s.
Receiver.
The list of TVs that support Insight UHD 4K channel decoding is taken from one
of the thematic conference sources on the Internet. According to this list,
we can be sure about the Samsung UHD 50 HU 7000 TV, since it is used in the 1TVCH monitoring system
and works properly. As for other models, they should be checked
or confirmed from reliable sources, but there is hope that all models of later versions
(such as Samsung 7500, 8500, 9000) work properly
too.
At the moment, the situation with household receivers is even more uncertain. With our expertise, we can
advise only the VU+ Solo 4K model that is present on
the Russian market. This has been tested by 1TVCH and is used in the monitoring system.
A distinctive feature of this model is the availability of a transcoder
from HEVC to MPEG 4 (AVC), which allows you to simultaneously convert and record a channel
into MPEG4 (AVC) at a speed of up to 10 Mbit/s while receiving a channel online from a satellite.
When this receiver is connected to a 4K TV via the HDMI 2.0 interface,
the descrambled video of the Insight UHD 4K channel will be shown successfully.
